It is so funny that I write paranormal romance because I was never really one for it until the last few years. In fact it was in the last couple of years that I read my first shifter novel and just fell in love. Prior to that my knowledge of paranormal romance was limited to vampires (yes those too!) My favorite vampire novel actually isn’t any of the ones that you would think. In fact I can’t even remember the name of it and it has been a number of years since I read it.
It was a book that I got from my public library and was a historical paranormal romance. I just remember the vampire in it was so mysterious and there were moments when it was so heartbreaking. He had to leave the woman he loved in order to protect her since was human and so he went to ground. Literally buried himself in the ground but could still feel her the whole time. Every time she cried for him and more. In the end he couldn’t bear to be parted from her any longer and made his way back to her. It was great!
So back to the why I chose to write paranormal. In truth it is because there are very few limits on it. Whatever I can think up I can write about. I do try to stay within the natural order of the animal world when possible. Well within reason most of the time. For example if an animal naturally mates for life then their shifter version will as well. Although that is the standard for most paranormal romance. I just simply love that I am free in ways that my contemporary romance (and I have a few on the horizon) won’t allow me to be. After all a man meeting a woman and taking her away to his cave would not only get him arrested in a contemporary book but more than likely get him shot. In a paranormal he might still get shot but he would survive and they would live happily ever after since she was his mate and couldn’t help but loving him from the moment he threw her over his shoulders.
